Preheat oven to 350.
Grease an 8 inch square pan.
Combine and set aside:
1 cup cornmeal
1/2 cup milk
Sift together:
1 1/4 cups flour
2 1/2 tsps. baking powder
1 tsp or less salt
Cream:
1/2 cup shortening
Beat in:
1/4 cup granulated sugar
Add the sifted dry ingredients alternately with a mixture of:
1 egg
1 cup milk
Blend in cornmeal mixture. Turn into prepared pan.
Bake 40 to 45 minutes until cake springs back when lightly touched. Serve hot with butter.
